Vaccines & Your Pet: What You Need to Know Keeping Pets Safe

Celebrating National Immunization Awareness Month

August is here, and while your pet may be thinking “sunshine and treats,” we’re thinking about something just as important, vaccines!

Vaccines are one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your furry friend from serious illness. They’re like a superhero shield for your pet’s immune system, keeping them safe from dangerous diseases and helping stop the spread to other pets (and sometimes even people!).

What Do Pet Vaccines Protect Against?

Not all vaccines are the same. Some are considered “core,” meaning all pets should have them, while others depend on your pet’s lifestyle—like how much time they spend outdoors or around other animals.

Here are a few of the major troublemakers we vaccinate against:

  • Rabies – Deadly, contagious to humans, and legally required for dogs and cats.
  • Distemper – A severe and often fatal virus for dogs and cats.
  • Parvo – Tough on young pups and causes intense GI symptoms.
  • Feline Leukemia – Weakens your cat’s immune system over time.
  • Leptospirosis – A bacterial disease that affects dogs, spreads through water or wildlife, and can also infect humans.
  • Bordetella – A frequent cause of “kennel cough” in social dogs.

When to Vaccinate Your Pets?

Your pet’s vaccine schedule will vary depending on age and lifestyle, but here’s the general idea:

  • Babies (puppies & kittens): Start vaccines around 6–8 weeks old and get boosters every few weeks until they’re 16–20 weeks.
  • Adults: Stay protected with regular boosters every 1 to 3 years.

Pet Vaccinations are Not Just a One-Time Thing

Think vaccines are a one-time thing? Not quite! Immunity can fade, and skipping boosters puts your pet at risk. That’s why keeping up with your pet’s shots is part of being a super-star pet parent.

When your pet is vaccinated, you’re helping protect vulnerable animals in your community too. It’s an easy way to do a whole lot of good.
